I’ve actually been using the Windows 2004 update for a few months now, and I’ve had a pretty positive experience overall. One of the first things I noticed was the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) 2, which brought some significant improvements. If you're into development or any work that relies on Linux, it's definitely a big step up. It uses a real Linux kernel, which dramatically improves performance over the previous iteration.
In terms of performance, I feel like my system is a bit more responsive. Startup and shutdown times seem slightly faster, although I can’t say it’s a massive difference. But every little bit helps, right? The new segment heap memory improvements for Win32 applications are supposed to help reduce memory usage, particularly when you’ve got a lot going on at once; it’s subtle, but on my machine, I have noticed less strain when multitasking.
Some folks have run into issues with older hardware. Driver compatibility can be a mixed bag, particularly if your hardware is quite old. One of my friends has an older laptop, and he had some trouble with his graphics card drivers not playing nicely, which seems to be a common complaint. Keeping backups and updating your drivers beforehand can alleviate some of these pains.
Regarding new features, the updated task manager where you can view your GPU temperature right there was a nice touch for me. It’s those little quality-of-life improvements that make a difference day-to-day. The new Cortana design is also noticeably different, though I don’t use it much personally.
There have been some reports about audio issues and problems with certain network adapters. After updating, I had to reconfigure my audio settings, but that wasn’t a major hassle for me. Just something to keep in mind.
If you're using older peripherals, it might be wise to check whether they’ll continue to be supported. Overall, it’s best to pay attention to the compatibility notes from Microsoft prior to updating.
Has anyone else noticed different issues or improvements? It’d be interesting to hear if others have had the same experience or if there’s something I might have missed!
