Is it just me, or does it seem like data recovery software on Windows is getting less effective with each new version/update? I’ve been around since the XP days, and back then, a lot of third-party tools could actually dig pretty deep, sometimes saving files from the brink of digital oblivion.
Now, every time I look for current recovery tools, I spot the same big names everywhere-Recuva, EaseUS, MiniTool, etc.-but the recovery success rates feel a lot lower on Windows 10/11, especially with newer drive formats and system protections like BitLocker, TRIM, or when files are deleted from SSDs. It often feels like more is irretrievable these days. Is this a technical limitation with newer Windows security features/trimming, or have the software makers stopped innovating because Windows is making things harder?
Has anyone found a reliable, modern solution for recovering deleted files (even after a format or on SSDs), or is everyone just resorting to regular backups at this point? Are we at the point where consumer-level recovery tools are mostly snake oil, at least for the average user?
