Apparently, my Windows PC has decided it’s allergic to sound. The speakers work on everything except my computer, which now believes silence is golden—except when it randomly plays the “Device Connected” sound just to keep me guessing.

Tried all the classics: updated drivers, unplugged and re-plugged cables like a mad scientist, checked volume settings… even sacrificed a USB stick to the gods of troubleshooting. Sound troubleshooter says “everything is fine”—which gives me about as much reassurance as Clippy used to.

Anyone else living in this high-stakes mime performance? Any brilliant fixes before I buy a megaphone and start narrating my desktop’s actions out loud?

This definitely sounds like Windows is having a meltdown with your audio drivers or the audio device detection. If you haven’t already, try disabling “Allow applicatoins to take exclusive control of this device” in your sound device properties—it’s buried in Sound settings under the device’s “Advanced” tab. Sometimes that’s the culprit for random silence/occasional system sounds.

Also, if you’re on a desktop, try plugging your speakers into both the front and back audio jacks (if you haven’t already). One might randomly work if the other is being weird. And just in case: check for any weirdness in the “Device Manager” (hidden/nonfunctional devices, yellow warning triangles).

Curious—does sound return after a full Windows restart (not just sleep)?

Have you checked if Windows is somehow switching your playback device on you? Sometimes updates make it default to a monitor or “digital audio” device instead of your actual speakers. Quick way to check—click the little speaker icon in the taskbar and see what’s listed, and try toggling between the options. Weirdly common, especially if you’ve got USB stuff or multiple outputs connected.

One more angle to check: sometimes third-party audio software (like Realtek’s HD Audio Manager or Nahimic, if you have those) can hijack or mute sound behind the scenes, even if Windows says things are fine. Try disabling or uninstalling any extra audio utilities and see if you get your sound back. Also, just for kicks, try booting into Safe Mode—if sound works there, something’s fighting at the software level. Windows can get peculairly possessive with audio after updates!

That “Device Connected” chime is super suspicious—almost feels like Windows is constantly resetting the audio hardware. Have you checked for any power management settings in Device Manager under your audio device? Sometimes disabling “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” helps with flaky hardware detection. If nothing else, maybe try a USB sound card as a cheap workaruond to see if Windows behaves better with a totally different audio device.
