Why does Microsoft still make backup and restore so convoluted in modern Windows?
After all these years, I still find Windows’ built-in backup options to be confusing and somewhat unreliable. We now have “File History,” the legacy “Backup and Restore (Windows 7),” OneDrive integration, and the expectation that we should use third-party solutions for anything robust. Why can’t Microsoft just provide ONE straightforward, modern backup tool that covers local files, external drives, AND cloud, with clear recovery options?
Has anyone actually relied on Windows’ built-in backups and had them save the day? Or do most people here just skip it and use Macrium, Acronis, or similar third-party apps? Why does it feel like Microsoft treats local file backup as an afterthought, especially compared to how flawless Time Machine feels on Macs?
Curious if anyone else trusts their data to Microsoft’s own tools, or if the consensus is to stay away. What am I missing?
